The Rising Hope Christian Center is a boarding school that serves both educational and community needs. Based in Bor, South Sudan, a city on the banks of the White Nile River, the 2.5-acre site features a sustainable campus of climate-responsive buildings constructed from local materials. The campus includes a primary and secondary school, dining hall and chapel, library, laboratory, parsonage, administrative offices, and training center – in total 50,000 square feet – that will accommodate up to 320 students from kindergarten through high school.

Drawing inspiration from the traditional South Sudanese village layout, the campus is arranged around a central recreation yard, reinforcing a sense of community and connection.

The structures will be built using compressed earth blocks, reflecting a commitment to local materials and sustainable building practices. Covered walkways and shaded balconies are incorporated into the design to provide passive cooling and natural ventilation, optimizing comfort in South Sudan’s hot and humid climate.

In a region where less than 10% of children complete primary school and infrastructure is limited, Rising Hope responds directly to these challenges. By integrating educational facilities with communal spaces, the project not only enhances access to education but also establishes a social hub for the community, providing critical resources and fostering long-term development. ■
